Golden Valley Classic MCC Trial
Sunday 6th June 2010
Report by Neil Turner

A Bumper Entry of Brit Bikes

Golden Valley Classic MCC held its annual British Bike only trial at Tinkley Lane, Nympsfield, Glos on Sunday 6th June. There was an excellent entry of 77 competitors that included 10 rigid machines, 4 schoolboys and a single sidecar team.

The clerk of the course had used the AMCA owned land to develop 15 sections over a 3 lap course. These subs provided a nice mix of stream, rocks, climbs and roots. All the subs were suited to the capabilities of British machines.

Probably the most difficult section was sub 12 – a dip into mud followed by a climb over rocks that got greasy from the mud being dragged up them as the trial continued. In fact, every competitor lost marks on laps 2 and 3 here except overall winner Nathan Jones on his C15, runner up Richard Townsend on a B40 and Tony Sullivan on a Matchless.

In the final count on the standard route, seven marks separated the top three finishers. Overall winner Nathan Jones, showing a very smooth and determined style throughout, completed the trial on sixteen marks; four ahead of Richard Townsend who was three ahead of Mike Fear on his Triumph.

Other credible scores on the standard route were achieved by the aforementioned Tony Sullivan, Rob Halliday on another Matchless and David Jones on a Greeves. The real heroes, though, were the three competitors that attacked the standard route on rigid machines. Big scores but big effort !

As usual, well over half of the entry was riding the easier of the two routes. On this route seven competitors completed the course on overall scores of 2 or less. Joint winners on this route – both clean and both rigids – were Steve Allen on a Matchless and Jon Cull on an Enfield. Two of the single digit scores were also recorded on the rigids of Stan Metcalf (BSA) and A Weddle (Panther).

Victory in the Lads and Lassies class on the easier route was taken on two marks by Josh Moss on a Bantam that he first rode the previous. His closest rival in class was Ben Wear, also on a borrowed Bantam.

The club’s next event is the Gerry Holdstock Eurocup / 7 Nations Trial on 3rd and 4th July at Cowcombe Woods, Chalford, Glos. This will be attended by some top class British and European riders on classic and twinshock solos and sidecars. Please see TMX for details.
