Golden Valley Classic MCC Trial
Sunday 29th January 2012
Over a ton at GVCMCC's first trial of 2012
Well over 100 riders turned up for Golden Valley Classic MCC's first club trial of 2012. Although, as usual, the majority had entered the clubman route, there was a good entry on the Gentlemen's route – designed for those at the beginning or end of their trials careers. The weather was cold although above freezing at Climperwell Farm, Nr Birdlip, Glos. This venue has not been used by the club for a year or more and it was great to be to back to this lovely mix of mud and roots with a good ride between sections. A total of ten sections had been arranged and the Clerk of the Course wisely elected to run the trial over 3 laps due to the large entry
Overall victory was taken by Nigel Tomkins on his Yamaha Majesty. Nigel, on a final score of four marks overall, narrowly pipped his closest rival schoolboy Ben Hayes on a GasGas 125 by a single mark. Both Nigel and Ben lost their marks on the twisty, rooted subs one and two. Both took a single dab on sub one, with Nigel's three singles on sub two beating Ben's total of four on the same sub. The third most difficult section on the Expert route was definitely sub seven. This section ended with a tricky cambered bank across roots. In fact it was only the top two and Adrian Steele that return a clean sheet on this section. Rides of note on the Expert route were delivered from Dave Morris, Robert Mycock on a Bultaco and Martyn Goodal
Over 60 riders entered the Clubmen's route, with two clean sheets being returned. These were from Colin Hedges on his Matchless and Rod Webb on his Beta Rev4T. Third man on the Clubmen's route was Bantam mounted Ken Garfield who was a single mark behind Colin and Rod. The top three were a good way clear of Stuart Hayes who finished the 3 laps on a total score of five. The two sidecar teams on this route ended up sharing the same Montesa 315 outfit due to mechanical problems early in the event. Alan Wear and Rick Lees took victory by nine marks from Alan's son Ben and Joe Browning. That said, Ben and Joe did collect a couple of fives in lieu of non-recorded scores. Shame, he could have beaten the old man !
The Gentlemen's route contained a healthy entry of almost twenty riders. Victory on this route was shared by veteran ex works rider Wilf Couldwell and Aaron Webb – both on Betas and at either end of their riding career. Aaron and Wilf both returned clean sheets. Clost rivals were Ron Little on his Ambassador and Harry Griffiths on his TY80 on three and four marks respectively.
The club's next trial is the fully subscribed March Hare road trial on March 4th.
Next single venue trial in the club's 2012 calendar is on 1st April. Please see TMX for details
